BCS Selection Woes

The BCS system has done its annual part in ticking off most college football fans again. Although Alabama may very well be the second best team in the country, there are a lot of people out there who think that they do not deserve another shot at the LSU Tigers because they have already lost to them 9-6 in a defensive game. Alabama’s defense is actually ranked first and LSU is right behind them in almost every category. Oklahoma State has the same record as Alabama but they had lost to Iowa State a few weeks ago and they are 8^th in their conference. It’s a little tougher for Alabama since they are forced to play their division rivals during the season. Alabama’s coach Nick Saban trusts the system and thinks that LSU and Alabama are the top two teams in the country. Either way, it looks like the SEC will win its 6^th consecutive national title this season. One ESPN writer compared it to the Yankees and Red Sox playing in the world series. What do you guys think?

Boeheim Safe

Head Coach Jim Boeheim will remain Syracuse’s basketball coach for the forseeable future according to schools chancellor Nancy Cantor. It is great that he is not following in the footsteps of Joe Paterno and although he does not believe the allegations, he understands why they had to fire Coach Fine. In Syracuse’s win vs. Stanford Friday night, the team left Bernie Fine’s seat vacant and each tapped it every time that they came off of the court. So whether the allegations were true or not still remains to be seen, but according to his crazy sounding wife, they seem pretty true. Anyways, Coach Boeheim was praised for how he handled the situation with this quote:

“What is most important is that this matter be fully investigated and that anyone with information be supported to come forward so that the truth can be found”

It is nice to see a man accept what is happening and believe in the process rather than just sticking with his friend of so many years. Hopefully it all works out and we find out that he didn’t fiddle with those ball boys.

Meyer Moves North

After week-long speculation about why he was taking time off from being an ESPN analyst, Urban Meyer accepted the Ohio State head coaching job. He will hope to turn the Buckeyes back around after all the controversy that haunted them after last season. Over 10 seasons of coaching, Meyer only has lost 23 games (of course he had Jesus-loving Tebow for a good amount of those years). He will make 40 million dollars over the next 7 years which begs the question, what am I doing with my life? This salary would put him at the top of the list with Alabama’s Nick Saban and Texas’ Mack Brown as the highest paid coaches in NCAA Football. Let’s see if this 40 million dollar man can turn Freshman Braxton Miller into a Tim Tebow-caliber player.

Syracuse Not “Fine”

Syracuse associate head coach, 65 year old Bernie Fine, was fired late Sunday night in the midst of child molestation accusations against him. In his 36^th season (a long ass time for an assistant coach to stay without leaving to be a head coach somewhere else), Fine is being accused by two former ball boys. I think he took their title as Ball Boys a bit too literal. In fact one of the guys who accused him is actually being accused of molesting a 14 year old boy…Probably just displacing the blame. However, I can understand why they had to let him go due to the big news of the Penn State scandal. I am also willing to bet that other assistant coaches around the country are going to get accused as well. Gotta love sports…

UPDATE: So it turns out Fine’s wife said that all of this was true over a phone conversation so ignore everything I said about how it might be fake. Lock him up!

College Round Up

Kemba who?? UConn extended their win streak to 16 games which dates back to their championship run last season with 23 points from each of their sophomore guards.

“Shabazz Napier and Jeremy Lamb held off pesky UNC Asheville — and showed again that Connecticut might have the best backcourt tandem in the country.” –ESPN

The Texas Longhorn football team also came back with a late field goal to win their rivalry game against A&M on turkey day 27-25. Even though Colt McCoy’s brother did next to nothing to help (just over 100 yards in the air), they still prevailed. Their lone TD in the air came from a 41 yard bomb from their wide receiver.

College Preview

Duke looks to take home the Maui Invitational trophy this year following UConn’s win in 2010 that eventually led to a national title. They will take on 14^th ranked Kansas Wednesday night at 10. Duke seems pretty unstoppable, making more than 50 percent of their 3 pointers in the last few games… and they usually take at least 20. The only player I will root for is Austin Rivers because of the obvious connection to Doc. Other than that I hope that both teams lose. More importantly, go Bruins, and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Merrimack’s #1

I know that this does not mean much to most people, but the Merrimack College Hockey team is now the #1 team in the country. Being that most of our followers probably do not follow Hockey East (the toughest division in the country) most will think that this isn’t a big deal. Well it is! For a school that has less than 2000 students in it, being ahead of teams such as BC, BU, Northeastern, and Minnesota is pretty amazing. So anyone who doesn’t care, and would rather hear something else about the Penn St. scandal or how LSU and Alabama are 1-2 again, go read ESPN. Warriors.

‘Cuse Me?

Well, looks like dominoes are dropping as allegations have arisen about Syracuse assistant men’s basketball coach, Bernie Fine. In case you missed SportsCenter the last few days, Bernie has been accused of molesting two ball boys (not funny) over a 16 month period. Now, I don’t really want to touch on the specifics of the incident, I’d rather talk about the way Syracuse is handling this situation – the exact way that Penn State should have. This is not to the degree of Penn State, but you still have one of the highest profile programs, with one of the most legendary college coaches of all time in the hot seat.

Syracuse and the police have agreed to investigate the matter (which has been investigated prior to this incident in ‘05), and has done the right thing by releasing a statement saying, “There should never be a rush to judgment when someone’s personal integrity and career are on the line.”

Now, what I find best about this is the direct action the university is taking, not just from administration, but from Beiheim himself. On ESPN, Beiheim said that it is a “bunch of a thousand lies …You don’t think it is a little funny that his cousin (relative) is coming forward? He supplied four names to the university that would corroborate his story. None of them did … there is only one side to this story. He is lying.”

Honestly, Beheim is a flat out G. This guy came out, defended his assistant head coach with facts and with fury, and took a stance. Something that Joe Pa failed to do.

Now, if real evidence surfaces, not only do I look like a dumbass, but we may have lost two of the most legendary coaches in collegiate history in a month span. I guess that would be payback for ‘Cuse leaving the big east.

Moment of Silence

Aside from this next story being about Woman’s Basketball (which in itself is a joke) it is a time to be serious. Last night, the college world lost Oklahoma State Girls’ basketball head coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna in a devastating plane crash in which there were no survivors. Coach Budke had just opened up his 7^th season as the head coach with a big win in their first game. He is best known for turning a winless team into a conference contender over the past few years. Last season, he led his girls to their first top-10 finish in school history. They are saying that it could take up to 9 months to determine the cause of the crash. Take a minute out of your day and be thankful for what you have and pray for the families and friends who are close to these victims.

Is there anything else to write about?

I know that everyone is getting sick of the NBA lockout and Penn St. scandal stories, but let’s face it, the rest of the sports world is pretty boring right now unless someone gets shot or something (praying for a Yankee or Jet player). News surfaced yesterday that they have no police record from assistant coach Mike Mcqueary about the alleged assaults on a 10 year old boy. However, it is rumored that the university officers knew of this and also might have ignored it to an extent. The whole situation is becoming more annoying and more confusing with every new piece of evidence introduced. Maybe they should burn down the school and start from scratch? As long as they kill Sandusky first. I see this as the only viable option to be able to push this out of the news.

On a side note: #9 Pittsburg loses to Long Beach State which is downright hilarious.. that would be like the Red Sox losing to the Orioles (Sorry Nons). How about we make the NCAA the new NBA seeing as the players don’t all care about making an extra million dollars and owners don’t exist.
