Happy Birthday Larry!

20111207-105544.jpgDecember 7th… a date most notable for the events that took place at Pearl Harbor that gloomy day in 1941. I hope everyone can take a moment today to honor this tragic event. But with all due respect to our country, this post is not going to focus on December 7th for that reason. Instead, as Celtics fever approaches, I’d like to wish Larry Bird a Happy Birthday! On this day, 1956, one of the greatest Celtics basketball players…scratch that, one of the greatest basketball players in history, was born. Nons, you can enjoy him with the Pacers, we’re content with the time he spent in Boston.

B’s Jet Lagged

Well it was a good run. After getting points in 15 straight games throughout the month of November and into early December, the Bruins finally met their match. The Jets. Aggravating when you think about it, but look at it this way. The pressure’s off now. We all knew the streak couldn’t last forever. We only lost 2-1, a close game and we didn’t have Seguin. Earlier in the day he had missed a team breakfast, presumably unintentionally, but still had to suffer the consequences. “Honest mistake,” Chiarelli said. “But we have team rules. He has to abide by them.” Regardless, the B’s can now feel a bit more relaxed without the bright spotlight of keeping the point streak alive. I expect them to have another strong month to cap off the year.

Fist Pump Costs Owens, Cathedral H.S. Super Bowl Title

Cathedral High School was just about to cap off an undefeated season with a Super Bowl victory when Matthew Owens scampered down the field to put Cathedral H.S. on top against rival Blue Hills Regional Technical School in the Division 4A Super Bowl game held at Bentley University on Saturday. Owens reached the 20 yard-line of Blue Hills Regional, threw up a single triumphant fist pump, ran into the end zone and handed the ball to the referee. When Owens turned around there was a flag on the field. Sure his first thought was probably a holding call on the offense, but when Owens was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty he was stunned. Owens was flagged for “taunting” from when he threw his fist up in the air in celebration and Blue Hills Regional went on to win the game 16-14. Cathedral H.S. Coach was not exactly thrilled either. Coach Duane Sigsbury stated, “If you’re going to take away from a kid being excited because he just made the play of his life, shame on you.” I could not agree more with the coach on this one. It’s an absolute disgrace that this referee flags a player at such an important time in such an important game for such a ridiculous penalty. This referee needs to be reprimanded. The best referee is one that goes unnoticed, and this guy did a really terrible job at that. He took away a Super Bowl title from a whole school and completely ruined Matthew Owens’ dreams. If Owens had spiked the ball and actually taunted the opponent, than shame on him and it would have been well deserved, but when an 18-year-old kid raises his hand in the air when scoring a Super Bowl winning touchdown and a referee flags him for it, that’s a disgrace and the MIAA should be ashamed of themselves. Take a look at the photo below and let us know if you think Owens deserved to be flagged.

Bears Have No Interest in Favre

According to sources the Chicago Bears have no interest in signing retired QB Brett Favre. Why wouldn’t you give the guy a shot? Lets clear one thing up first, I believe it is in Favres best interest to stay retired because if he were to fail it would just be another chance for the media to take a shot at his legacy. As for the Bears, I would want the guy. Better yet I would want anyone other than Caleb Hanie. The Bears have a legitimate playoff shot, but with Hanie under center they might not even win another game. What do they have to lose? If they bring in a QB like Favre or McNabb and they succeed; Lovie Smith will look like a genius. If they fail, at least they gave it a shot with someone other than a guy that has 6 interceptions in two games. It’s do or die time for the Bears. They have a quality defense that can overshadow a mediocre offense to make a legitimate playoff push. What they do with their quarterback situation this week will show their fans how dedicated they are to making this season a success.

New NHL Layout (worth reading)

The NHL is changing their ways completely over the next few years, turning two conferences into 4.  There will be two conferences with 7 teams and two with 8 teams.  The Bruins consist of themselves, Canadiens, Panthers, Lightning, Leafs, Sabres, and Senators.  Each of these teams we will play 3 times at home, and 3 times away.  For every other team, we will play them once at home, and once away.  This can be both good and bad:

Good:

  • Every team gets to play everyone at least once with home ice advantage.
  • There will be less traveling for west coast teams (which doesn’t really matter for us at all)
  • Games played in different time zones will be earlier so we won’t have to be up till 1 AM watching us smoke the Canucks and the Sedin sisters again this season
  • Only have to play the Caps and Penguins twice

Bad:

  • We will only see the Flyers twice, and that is usually one of the best games to watch during the regular season
  • It will be confusing as hell once playoff time comes..

Playoffs will consist of 4 teams from each conference going to the tourney (yes math geniuses, that’s 16 teams)  Each conference will play within itself to find a winner.  After that winner is found, the final 4 teams will be determined by total points.  So there is no rhyme or reason telling us which conference we will play until right before it happens.  We could play Vancouver in the semi’s now and play a team right in our back yard like the Islanders or Devils (if they both didn’t suck) in the finals.

It’s all still being voted on but it passed through the league and looks to be the final layout so get used to it.  But until then, Go B’s!

The Changeup

Talk about a trade. Bobby V for Tito. Tito for Bobby V. To be honest, I’m perfectly content with this move. It’s better than seeing him go to another ball club and win a World Series. Not that I’d wish him bad luck with managing another team, I’m just sure it would stir up a lot of criticism towards the Sox and leave an uneasy feeling in any Boston fan’s stomach. Now, we really have nothing to lose. Like I’ve said before, I like the fact that Bobby Valentine’s taking charge. I think it’s just the kind of change that the Sox need to get back on their feet. Some sort of momentum. With the news of Tito not going to another team, and instead getting behind the camera on ESPN, some of the player’s minds will be put as ease as well. More good news for Red Sox Nation and another step forward.

Another New Big 3?

According to sources, there is a good chance that Dwight Howard and Chris Paul could be wearing Purple and Yellow this season. Yes, both of them. This story popped up on my news feed at like 2AM last night and I couldn’t believe it. I was sold on CP3 heading to NY to join Amarie and Melo seeing how that’s the only thing he’s been saying. I also think that it would be ridiculous to match those three guys up. But if Dwight and Paul head over to the Lakers, the whole league is in trouble. I know everybody is against Kobe, but we have seen what he can do with a quality big man. Sprinkle Paul (who would be better Derek Fisher) into the mix and you can pretty much say that LA has the West on lockdown. Now, the Lakers would definitely have to dish out Odom, Bynum and Gasol in a deal like this, but I think the return would be incredible. Then again, we have seen how Mike Brown coaches superstars, and no Phil Jackson on the sideline could create some trouble. Nonetheless, the defensive player of the year paired with one of the most dynamic point guards in the league and one of the most clutch players of time? Uh oh…

Sandusky Update (Does anyone care?)

I know it is getting old but there’s not much going on yet today.  It turns out that all 8 people who accused former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky are going to testify.  So much for his theory about it being a hoax.  Unless all 8 people came up with the same idea and same exact story this guy is pretty screwed.  If he really thinks what he did is okay then he should go to hell anyways.  Now that they will be under oath his lawyer will have his shot at poking holes in their stories.  Be prepared for this to be the only thing on ESPN during that trial, so you may want to get your sports news here (@BostonSB) because I will be staying away from that one. Hopefully there is a good game or something on that day that will be more interesting than listening to an old man talk about his “precious moments” with little boys.  Come to think of it, WNBA games seem more interesting, and that’s saying a lot.

NFL Week 13 Recap

Seahawks 31 Eagles 14

Our Pick: Seahawks

Seattle outlasted the Vick-less Eagles as the Eagles fell to 4-8 and the disappointing season continues. Marshawn Lynch ran hard and took over again, and Vince Young did everything he could to lose the game for the Eagles.

Jets 34- Redskins 19

Our Pick: Jets

Shonn Greene scored 3 TD’s and the Jets put up 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Jets kept their playoff hopes alive and improved to 7-5.

Chiefs 10 Bears 3

Our Pick: Bears

Kyle Orton lasted one single play in a Chiefs uniform before dislocating his finger and the QB play for both teams went downhill from there. The only touchdown was scored on a hail mary at the end of the first half that got tipped into the hands of Cheifs RB/WR Dexter McCluster. As far as being a Bears fan, Donovan McNabb sounds much better than Caleb Hanie right now. Or even Brett Favre? Imagine that.

Titans 23 Bills 17

Our Pick: Titans

The Titans stayed within a couple of games of the Texans who pulled out a surprising win this week. The Bills are just flat-out horrible. How does that $60 million deal for Fitzpatrick look now? Chris Johnson looks back to old form. Watch out for this team if they sneak into the playoffs.

Dolphins 34 Raiders 14

Our Pick: Raiders

The Dolphins proved me wrong this week and blew out the Raiders. This shows the Raiders just aren’t there yet and still have a lot of work to do. The Dolphins look poised to save their coaches job in Miami (Although he already put his home on the market after starting 0-7). The Raiders better not let this one slip away or its going to be a real disappointing offseason in Oakland.

Steelers 35 Bengals 7

Our Pick: Steelers

There were a couple of things that really stood out in this game. The Bengals are too young and just not ready to compete in a division with veteran teams like the Steelers and Ravens; the second being that the Steelers offense can get the job done. With weapons like Wallace, Mendenhall and Big Ben at the helm, this offense is the real deal.

Texans 17 Falcons 10

Our Pick: Falcons

The Texans and Rookie QB T.J Yates got the job done this week. The defense played great and it will have to continue if they want to make a run in the Playoffs because I don’t see the offense putting up much more than 17-20 points unless Foster has a freakish game. The Falcons fell apart and if they continue to play this way they’ll find themselves watching the playoffs from the comfort of their homes come January.

Broncos 35 Vikings 32

Our Pick: Broncos

I couldn’t go against Tebow, especially against the Vikings without Peterson. The Broncos defense looked very shaky throughout the whole game but they came up with a huge interception when they really needed it. They seem to be letting Tebow throw the ball and little more and it worked out for them as he threw for a couple TD’s while completing 66.7% of his passes.

Panthers 38 Buccaneers 19

Our Pick: Panthers

Cam Newton ran for 3 TD’s to give him a league leading 13 on the season. Josh Johnson remained winless as a starting QB in the NFL and the Buc’s just keep looking worse each week.

Ravens 24 Browns 10

Our Pick: Ravens

The Ravens got the win they were supposed to get and the Browns continued to struggle. Ray Rice was dominant again and looks like one of the leagues best RB’s this year. The Browns are just unlucky playing in the division they are in.

Packers 38 Giants 35

Our Pick: Giants

The Giants look like they had a chance to win this one in Overtime but their poor clock management on their final drive left too much time on the clock for Rodgers and he drove right down the field in under a minute. This shows the Packers are beatable.

Cardinals 19 Cowboys 13

Our Pick: Cowboys

This is what I meant a couple of weeks back that the Cowboys often times don’t play up to their talent. This is a game you cannot lose. They had the opportunity to pull two games up on the Giants with only 4 to go and they blow it by losing to a team like the Cardinals. I’m sure Jerry Jones isn’t exactly thrilled right now.

49ers 26 Rams 0

Our Pick: 49ers

The 49ers clinched the division and a playoff bitch this week by improving to 10-2 on the season. Jim Harbaugh has completely turned this team around and will certainly be in the running for coach of the year.

Saints 31 Lions 17

Our Pick: Saints

The Saints continue to keep putting up explosive numbers on offense and the loss of Suh on the defensive side of the ball for the Lions certainly did not help. The Lions have come back to earth after their 5-0 start and have lost five of their last seven.

Chargers 38 Jaguars 14

Our Pick: Chargers

Believe it or not the 5-7 Chargers still have a shot at the playoffs. They just need to hope they can be within a game of the Raiders come their week 17 matchup. The Jaguars passing situation just looks horrible and I’m sure the Panthers are glad they chose Newton of Gabbert.

Our Week 13 Picks Combined Record: 11-5

MNF Pick ‘Em – Week 13

Chargers @ Jaguars 8:30PM

Tonight the disappointing chargers will be taking on the struggling Jaguars. Neither teams’ season has gone as planned, but for the chargers this certainly wasn’t expected. Philip Rivers and the chargers should come out on top tonight against a team that has essentially no passing attack. The Jaguars will attempt to lean on Maurice Jones-drew but it just wont be enough if they get down early.

Prediction: Chargers 27 Jaguars 13
