College Weekend Recap

It was a good day to watch college basketball on Saturday with barely anything else on as a Boston sports fan.  #14 Murray State was able to beat #16 Saint Mary’s by double digits,  while #1 Kentucky, #5 Kansas, & #7 North Carolina were all able to do the same in their games.  #6 Ohio State was upset by rival #19 Michigan 56-51.  #15 San Diego St was also upset for the 3rd straight game against Air Force.

On Sunday, there were few good games on.  For a while, unranked Rutgers was able to keep it close against #2 Syracuse but the Orange proved to be too much in the Big Ten conference battle as they beat them by 10.  #4 Duke also ran right over BC with a final score of 75-50.

March Madness is right around the corner!

Bad Night For Ranked Teams

It was a bad night to be a ranked team in college basketball last night.  With the exception of #6 Ohio State & #12 Florida, who won by 10 points and 9 points, respectively, they all lost. #11 UNLV lost their first game since being ranked 11th on Monday, losing to TCU in a high scoring game, 102-97. Guard Hank Thorns had 32 points in the victory.  Unranked LSU topped #23 Miss. State in overtime, while Clemson held #22 Virginia to only 48 points as they won the ACC battle.

Close One in Louisville

There was a close one in the Big East last night on ESPN between #2 Syracuse & #18 Louisville.  It was a very low scoring game so it was tough to tell who played well unless you actually watched the game. Scoop Jardine was utterly useless scoring 0 points on 0-8 shooting following his big game against UConn last week.  The game came down to the wire when Louisville’s junior guard Peyton Siva threw the ball away with 5 seconds left when he probably should have just shot it.  Syracuse had a chance to seal the victory with 2 seconds left but failed to do so with a missed free throw.  Louisville had a last second chance but failed to convert as the Cardinals fell to the Orange 52-51.  Only 4 players in the whole game scored in double digits, no one going over 16 points.

College Sports Traditions

20120213-141648.jpgWith the intensity of Rivalry Week upon us and March Madness only weeks away, the hype surrounding not just college basketball, well mostly, but all college sports is heating up quickly. What better time than now to highlight the great traditions on campuses across the country? The passion and loyalty of the fans and students is second to none. If that doesn’t get you going, some of them are just flat out hilarious. This is one of those times when I wish I went to a big D1 athletics school. Anyways, OnlineColleges.net posted an article highlighting the best and funniest college sports traditions. I’ll give you a sneak preview at one of them below, but click the link below to check out the rest!

College Recap

For those of you too focused on the NFL playoffs this weekend, you missed a pretty good weekend in college basketball.  #5 Ohio State defeated #8 Indiana in a battle of the Big Ten powerhouses.  #6 Duke came back against unranked Clemson to upset them late in the second half.  More importantly, #3 UNC got smoked by 33 points against unranked Florida State (FSU). I only put that because we all know what FSU stands for and thats exactly what they did.  #16 UConn handed Notre Dame their first home loss in 29 games, and #1 Syracuse and #2 Kentucky both held on to keep their top rankings in tact.

#1 Syracuse looks to stay perfect against unranked Pittsburgh tonight in a battle of the Big East.  Another good game to watch for those of you who don’t wanna watch the Bruins win and the Celtics lose, is #4 Baylor vs. #10 Kansas, where Baylor looks to stay undefeated in a conference battle.

Meyer Moves North

After week-long speculation about why he was taking time off from being an ESPN analyst, Urban Meyer accepted the Ohio State head coaching job. He will hope to turn the Buckeyes back around after all the controversy that haunted them after last season. Over 10 seasons of coaching, Meyer only has lost 23 games (of course he had Jesus-loving Tebow for a good amount of those years). He will make 40 million dollars over the next 7 years which begs the question, what am I doing with my life? This salary would put him at the top of the list with Alabama’s Nick Saban and Texas’ Mack Brown as the highest paid coaches in NCAA Football. Let’s see if this 40 million dollar man can turn Freshman Braxton Miller into a Tim Tebow-caliber player.

Syracuse Not “Fine”

Syracuse associate head coach, 65 year old Bernie Fine, was fired late Sunday night in the midst of child molestation accusations against him. In his 36th season (a long ass time for an assistant coach to stay without leaving to be a head coach somewhere else), Fine is being accused by two former ball boys. I think he took their title as Ball Boys a bit too literal. In fact one of the guys who accused him is actually being accused of molesting a 14 year old boy…Probably just displacing the blame. However, I can understand why they had to let him go due to the big news of the Penn State scandal. I am also willing to bet that other assistant coaches around the country are going to get accused as well. Gotta love sports…

UPDATE: So it turns out Fine’s wife said that all of this was true over a phone conversation so ignore everything I said about how it might be fake. Lock him up!

College Preview

Duke looks to take home the Maui Invitational trophy this year following UConn’s win in 2010 that eventually led to a national title. They will take on 14th ranked Kansas Wednesday night at 10. Duke seems pretty unstoppable, making more than 50 percent of their 3 pointers in the last few games… and they usually take at least 20. The only player I will root for is Austin Rivers because of the obvious connection to Doc. Other than that I hope that both teams lose. More importantly, go Bruins, and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Merrimack’s #1

I know that this does not mean much to most people, but the Merrimack College Hockey team is now the #1 team in the country.  Being that most of our followers probably do not follow Hockey East (the toughest division in the country) most will think that this isn’t a big deal.  Well it is! For a school that has less than 2000 students in it, being ahead of teams such as BC, BU, Northeastern, and Minnesota is pretty amazing. So anyone who doesn’t care, and would rather hear something else about the Penn St. scandal or how LSU and Alabama are 1-2 again, go read ESPN.  Warriors.

Moment of Silence

Aside from this next story being about Woman’s Basketball (which in itself is a joke) it is a time to be serious.  Last night, the college world lost Oklahoma State Girls’ basketball head coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna in a devastating plane crash in which there were no survivors.  Coach Budke had just opened up his 7th season as the head coach with a big win in their first game.  He is best known for turning a winless team into a conference contender over the past few years. Last season, he led his girls to their first top-10 finish in school history.  They are saying that it could take up to 9 months to determine the cause of the crash.  Take a minute out of your day and be thankful for what you have and pray for the families and friends who are close to these victims.
