New Rankings

#1 Kentucky and #2 Syracuse both cemented their places at the top of the rankings for at least one more week.  Ohio State, however, lost their 3rd place ranking and are now #6, thanks to now #8 Michigan State. #7 UNC lost to #4 Duke, but only fell two spots. Missouri moved from 4th to 3rd and Kansas moved from 10th to 5th.

Mich. St. 12th to 8th
Baylor 6th to 10th
UNLV 16th to 11th
Florida 7th to 12th
Marquette 19th to 13th
Murray State 7th to 14th
Notre Dame NR to 25th
Gonzaga NR to 24th

Close One in Louisville

There was a close one in the Big East last night on ESPN between #2 Syracuse & #18 Louisville.  It was a very low scoring game so it was tough to tell who played well unless you actually watched the game. Scoop Jardine was utterly useless scoring 0 points on 0-8 shooting following his big game against UConn last week.  The game came down to the wire when Louisville’s junior guard Peyton Siva threw the ball away with 5 seconds left when he probably should have just shot it.  Syracuse had a chance to seal the victory with 2 seconds left but failed to do so with a missed free throw.  Louisville had a last second chance but failed to convert as the Cardinals fell to the Orange 52-51.  Only 4 players in the whole game scored in double digits, no one going over 16 points.

Rivalry Week Round Up

Even though it was close early, #1 Kentucky proved to be a little bit too much to handle when they battled #7 Florida in an SEC conference game.  Forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 13 points and added 13 boards in the 20 point blowout. Doron Lamb added 18 and Anthony Davis added 16 and a few nice blocks and alley-oops.

#15 Creighton was upset by sub-par Evansville in a Missouri Valley Conference showdown. They have lost two straight now, and since they have not beaten any ranked teams, or even played any for that matter, they will most likely fall to the 22nd-25th rank, or just won’t make it at all.

#3 Ohio State was barely able to hang on against unranked Purdue. Senior Guard William Buford was able to drop 29 points and grab 7 rebounds while other star Jared Sullinger was able to score 18 points and grab 6 rebounds of his own.

College Weekend Review

Since we are pretending Sunday didn’t happen, I decided to take Monday off as well. Let’s call it a “personal day”.  Scores are a bit late but seeing as everyone was focused on the game that didn’t happen Sunday evening, I figured none of you would care.

Just as predicted, Kentucky & Syracuse both won with ease.  #3 Ohio State beat #20 Wisconsin by 6 points in a tough battle where Sullinger had to drop 24 points and grab 10 boards in order to hold on.  Unfortunately, my other prediction was wrong… barely. #8 Kansas was unable to upset #4 Missouri because they decided to heave up a contested 3 pointer with 3 seconds left rather than kicking it to the wide open 3 man for a clear shot.

Anyways, there was some good in the weekend (on the basketball court, not football field).  #5 Duke was upset by Miami. HA. #10 Michigan State was able to beat #22 Michigan by 10 points in an in-state rivalry game.  If only I could pick my bets as well as I pick these games.

Since it’s a day late, we also know this week’s rankings so here is the top 5.

  1. Kentucky
  2. Syracuse
  3. Ohio State
  4. Missouri
  5. North Carolina*

College Basketball Weekend Preview

A few high magnitude games this weekend beginning on Saturday.  Yes, once again I am leaving out the face that Harvard is playing on Friday.  #1 Kentucky & #2 Syracuse both have conference games but against teams that are 2 games below .500.  The first dual-ranked game is between #3 Ohio State & #20 Wisconsin.  This is both a ranked game, and a Big Ten conference game.

Prediction: Ohio State

The other big game is between #4 Missouri & #8 Kansas. Once again, this is a conference match-up and I think it’s going to be real close.  I am really tempted to pick Kansas because I think Thomas Robinson is a beast.  However, Missouri is home and they have only lost 2 games all season.  I just haven’t fully bought into the Mizzou hype yet.
Prediction: Kansas

On Sunday, #5 Duke takes on unranked Miami.  Miami is 13-7 so they are not a team that will be walked right over.  However, I do not see the Blue Devils losing this game.  #10 Michigan State is home against rival #22 Michigan in a battle of the Big Ten. Gonna be another close game as always but since State is home, I think they can hang on.

Prediction: Michigan State

College Weekend Round Up

Kentucky, Missouri, Murray State, Syracuse, Duke, Baylor, & UNC all won with ease this weekend solidifying their spots in the top 10 for at least one more week.  #5 Kansas lost by 8 against unranked Iowa State, which is their first loss in the Big 12 this season.  Pittsburgh beat #10 Georgetown in which I predicted would be a tough game as always.  #19 UConn continued to struggle against Notre Dame on Sunday.  Lastly, #3 Ohio State beat #22 Michigan in a battle of the Big Ten.

NCAA Weekend Preview

I am going to just skip over Friday because the only ranked game consists of #23 Harvard vs. Yale… Not even gonna touch that one.  On Saturday, #1 Kentucky looks to stay perfect in the SEC against LSU, which shouldn’t be tough considering their star-studded line up.  #2 Missouri looks to bounce back from their loss against Oklahoma State with a game against Texas Tech.  Normally you could count Texas Tech out but the way Missouri played the other night, they could be in trouble.  #4 Syracuse will face a tough test when they play always-strong West Virginia in a battle of the Big East.  #5 Kansas will most likely run over Iowa State, even though they have a pretty decent record so far.  #10 Georgetown plays usually-ranked Pittsburgh in a big game.  Even though the Panthers are unranked, they are going to give Georgetown a run for their money at 4:00 on ESPN.

On Sunday, #22 Michigan will look to take down power house #3 Ohio State.  This in my opinion will be the game of the weekend.  At night, Notre Dame will look to take advantage of #19 UConn’s recent struggles.  However, UConn will be wearing their new uniforms (click here) , so maybe they can find some sort of spark that they have been lacking in recent weeks.

Nike’s New Uniforms

We all know about the Oregon Ducks and their uniforms that change every week.  Now Nike has released a new Platinum line for 9 powerhouse basketball teams (both men and womens? because everyone cares about that) . The teams that were chosen to wear the Hyper Elite Platinum uniforms are Arizona, UConn, Duke, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina and Syracuse men and the Baylor and UConn women.  Being a big UConn fan, I like the idea of changing it up, maybe they can play better too!  On the other hand, I wouldn’t mind seeing UNC and Duke lose in those colors, or any colors for that matter.  These jerseys will debut on Sunday when UConn plays Notre Dame.  Each teams jersey has a little bit different coloring, but for the most part look the same.

College Recap

For those of you too focused on the NFL playoffs this weekend, you missed a pretty good weekend in college basketball.  #5 Ohio State defeated #8 Indiana in a battle of the Big Ten powerhouses.  #6 Duke came back against unranked Clemson to upset them late in the second half.  More importantly, #3 UNC got smoked by 33 points against unranked Florida State (FSU). I only put that because we all know what FSU stands for and thats exactly what they did.  #16 UConn handed Notre Dame their first home loss in 29 games, and #1 Syracuse and #2 Kentucky both held on to keep their top rankings in tact.

#1 Syracuse looks to stay perfect against unranked Pittsburgh tonight in a battle of the Big East.  Another good game to watch for those of you who don’t wanna watch the Bruins win and the Celtics lose, is #4 Baylor vs. #10 Kansas, where Baylor looks to stay undefeated in a conference battle.

College Round Up

It was a weekend full of upsets in college basketball.  And it wasn’t just me feeling upset that Duke and North Carolina both won.  #1 Kentucky was upset by unranked, but undefeated Indiana at the buzzer.  Probably the most exciting game of the year so far in my opinion.  #2 Ohio State was also upset by #13 Kansas.  It should be mentioned, however, that the Buckeyes were playing without the best player (in my opinion) in the league due to back spasms.  I think they will still be ranked near the top once he is back and well.

Usually, I wouldn’t comment on a team like Xavier that no one cares about, including myself, but if you watch the news at all, you should know what happened.  A bench clearing brawl, including everyone that could reach an opposing player, ended a blow out by #8 Xavier of Cincinnati before the game was even over.  The only thing that was missing was Ron Artest running into the stands and punching fans in the face.  I am willing to bet that Artest (or as he now likes to be called Metta World Peace??) is laughing like hell remembering his ‘glory’ days with the Pacers.
