Boston is a Hockey Town

It’s been four days since a CBA agreement has “tentatively” been reached, less than a month from a possible opening day (nearly 2 months behind schedule), and already the NHL has been put on the back burner. Don’t get me wrong, I grew up playing basketball but come from a hockey family, so I try to be as impartial as possible. A few days off and it feels like everyone has forgotten about the Bruins. Maybe it’s just the excitement of the NBA’s sudden rise from the grave, but we can’t forget where the Bruin’s stand. The B’s look to cap off an incredible month of November (11-1) tonight against the Leafs. A win will help them secure first place in the Northeast Division, pushing ahead of Toronto. The B’s have already won twice against the Leafs in the early season, so you can expect them to come out swinging. I’m confident this will be a game the Bruins won’t allow themselves to lose. Not only is first place on the line, but the B’s want to continue to prove that Boston is still a hockey town.

Weekend Recap

Amidst the turkey comas and holiday hangovers, Thanksgiving weekend was good to us Boston sports fans. Let’s recap: Despite losing a tough one via shootout, the Bruins are 11-1 in their last 12 games, one point back of the lead in the Northeast Division. The Pats walked into Philadelphia and crushed the playoff hopes of the alleged “Dream Team” as they continue to find themselves seated atop the AFC East. It may not have been from the Celts directly, but the NBA made all fans happy as it looks like the Celtics will have a season, meaning I can finally stop writing up mock game day posts. Unfortunately, nothing groundbreaking from the Sox, but I guess with the way things have been going for them lately, no news is good news. Happy Monday!

B’s Focused

Heading into tonight’s matchup against the Sabres, the only thing that the Bruins are concerned about is stretching their win streak to 10 games and claiming first place in the Northeast Division. The Sabres may have something else in mind. Retaliation. At least that’s what the media is building it up to be, and it could end up helping the B’s. The hit that Lucic put on Miller only eleven days ago is still fresh in everyone’s mind. A controversial hit like that always leads to this sort of hype before the next time the teams meet, but the Bruins are focused on the greater goal at hand. “It’s not like you can just go out there and be stupid,” Ference said Monday. “We were in a similar situation obviously with the Cooke thing. If they want to get goofy then that’s fine. Our team is well equipped for different kinds of games.” The Bruins are ready to play hockey, whether that means reacting to Buffalo vengeance or not. If the Sabres go head hunting tonight, you can bet the house that the B’s will be ready.

Bruins Streaking

For anyone that didn’t notice because there was some other game on, the Bruins beat the Canadiens Monday night 1-0. Defenseman Andrew Ference scored the lone goal on Carey Price, although he only saw 18 shots come his way. Tim Thomas on the other hand saw 33 and stopped them all. Pretty odd game seeing as there were only 10 minutes worth of penalties compared to the usual amount of about 40 plus a few fights. There was only one stand out fight and that was when Canadiens fans jumped a Bruins fan and beat the hell out of him. We should give these guys a free pass to the Garden next game so we can return the favor.

The Bear Hunt

Now it’s only natural for teams across the league to be gunning for the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, but after a 3-7 start you can assume that desire began to dwindle. The B’s were looking more like the Nets of the NHL than a team eager to defend their title. As of late, things have begun to turn around. November has been a solid month so far for the reigning Stanley Cup champions (much better than for the NBA). The Bruins knocked off the New Jersey Devils last night to improve their November winning streak to six games. Back on the successful track, you can put money on the fact that the flame to take down the champs has once again been fully ignited. Aside from the win streak, the B’s have been physically dominating teams, incurring a few controversial headlines (cough Lucic) along the way. You best believe that teams are itching to get their shot at the Bruin’s now, especially come November 23rd when the B’s step on the ice in Buffalo.

The Looch Crew

This whole Lucic thing from the other night is killin’ me. I follow hockey and am a huge Bruins fan, but basketball is definitely my “go-to” winter sport. So stop me if I’m wrong, but don’t hockey players pride themselves in how much tougher they are than any other athlete? Although not how I’d state it, I definitely do respect hockey players for that aspect of the game. That being said, how can Ryan Miller come out and complain about a hit that resulted in a minor penalty. Did he think he could come about 20 feet out of the net to try and stop a Lucic breakaway without suffering the consequences? I love the mentality of playing tough and physical in any sport if you want to win. Since Miller came well out of his crease to play the puck like a defender, he’s going to get treated like a defender, especially with the Looch coming at you. Anyways, Lucic has a hearing with the NHL today at 1pm to determine if they’ll be any consequences for the hit. With the NFL implementing all these new hitting rules, I’ll be disappointed in the NHL as well if they make a big deal out of this. Never more fitting than in this situation…It’s just part of the game. NO EASY BUCKETS!

B’s Back on Track – Thanks Tyler

A bottle of blue Gatorade and some Advil on the nightstand was all it took, as the B’s quickly cured their Cup hangover and are again thirsty for victory. The young Tyler Seguin has stepped up his play immensely this season, leading the team in both overall points and goals while claiming the NHL’s first Star of the Week today. Last season he ended the year with 11 goals and 11 assists. Not bad for a Rookie who also contributed to bringing home Lord Stanley’s most prized possession. This year, only 15 games in, he has already racked up 11 goals and 9 assists for 20 points, 1 figure more than his age. Begs the question: What am I doing with my life?

Thursday Breakdown

Well when you’re right, you’re right. The Bruins are back on track with a three game winning streak and the lockout still hasn’t ended. I guess anyone could have predicted the latter, but nonetheless I’ll give myself a pat on the back.

Elsewhere, not much has been able to shine through the ongoing story over at Penn State. Now, I don’t have too much insight about the situation, but you got to feel for old Joe. I would never stick up for the horrible actions that occurred there, but I mean over six decades of service and overwhelming success for the school and not one of the board of trustees would step up for the guy at all. Kind of sad when you think about. On the other hand that Sandusky guy deserves everything he’s got coming to him. Not enough room in this world for pathetic people like him.

Enough Fooling Around

Eleven games in and the Bruins are 4-7. Not exactly expected or ideal, but also not a reason at all to worry. They’re still coming out of the Stanley Cup hangover. Marchand and Seguin have stepped off the bar counters and are ready to roll. Chara is, well, still 12’7” and a complete beast. A victory at home Tuesday and three day rest after may be just what the Bruins have needed. The turnaround continues tomorrow. They’re going to come out firing Saturday night and take this one in Toronto for sure.
