Bruins vs. Blues Recap

Unfortunately, I couldn’t catch the game last night but the Bruins did pull out a solid 4-2 victory against one of the better home teams in the NHL. Marchand got on the board with two goals in the game scoring 2:29 into the first. It’s good to see this team have some success on the scoreboard because as of late they have been weak in the goal-scoring department. It doesn’t look like Nathan Horton is coming back any time soon. The Rick Nash trade rumors are starting to swirl and I would love to see the big goal-scorer in a Bruins sweater, but at what cost? He is a special player and an elite goal scorer (and only 27 years old) but he will command at least Tuukka Rask and top D prospect Dougie Hamilton. The Bruins play the Sabres tomorrow night.

I’m Throwing Another Name Into the Toughest Bruin Race

So I saw Jimmy’s post yesterday about the toughest Bruin on the team, Lucic or Thornton. It’s definitely a toss-up between those two but I’m probably taking Looch because he has the size advantage. However, I honestly believe both of these guys are not the toughest on the team. Two words Adam McQuaid. He is an animal. A throwback hockey player who is tough as nails and will beat the tar out of anyone who messes with his teammates in a manner he does not find appropriate. Sure, Chara would probably beat any of them in a fight but that’s because he is 6’9” 260 lbs. Check out the video below to see a McQuaid beatdown.

Milan Lucic vs. Shawn Thornton

Having cooled off lately, the Bruins can at least be satisfied to have the NHL’s Toughest Man on their team, Milan Lucic. But what about Shawn Thornton? Does that mean they have the TWO toughest players in the NHL? I mean I wouldn’t want to go up against either but if you had to choose one, who would you rather drop the gloves with? Lucic or Thornton?

Thornton Embodies the Black and Gold

20120220-145108.jpgIf Shawn Thornton is not one of your favorite Bruins players then you probably are not a big fan of hockey. This guy is laying his ass on the line night in and night out. In terms of skill he is limited. But he is willing to out-work, out-hussle, and out-physical other players. I’m glad Claude brought the fourth line (Campbell, Paille, Thornton) back together against the Wild, because they bring an energy this team has clearly lacked since the calendar flipped to 2012.

Check out Shawn’s fight against a much bigger Matt Kassian (6’4” 232 lbs) who keeps his helmet on for the whole fight. Thornton hangs in after a quick start by Kassian and gets a few shots in. He is literally not afraid of any player in the NHL, but he knows the right time to get involved. Claude trusts his judgement and usually Thornton rewards him with a well-timed fight that raises the energy of the rest of the team to where it needs to be. He is a throwback hockey player that is fun to watch. Next time you are watching a B’s game, pay attention when the fourth line comes out and you will see constantly these guys out working the other team.

Looking to Score on Valentine’s Day?

Yes, you guessed it. The second post from the BSB ladies comes just in time for Hallmark holiday of the year, Valentine’s Day. You may be thinking, what does Valentine’s Day and Boston Sports have in common? Absolutely nothing if you already have dinner reservations and flowers picked out. However, if that doesn’t apply to you, I would high tail it to the Garden on Tuesday night to celebrate the right way…with the Bruins. The Bruins are playing the New York Rangers…Going to be a good game, right? Well, I’m not here to talk about the game.

Rather, I am here to provide you the game plan on how to find the most eligible bachelors and bachelorettes while you are at the Garden.

1. Find the Perfect Seat: The Loge Sections 1-22 are prime locations for meeting Mr. or Mrs. Right Now. The right amount of rowdy and fun.
2. Make conversation in the Beer Line: As many of you BSB-ers know, beer lines can be brutal. You want to get your drink on (responsibility) but there is always an 85 year old working the line you are in. This presents the perfect opportunity to make conversation with that special someone.
3. Don’t bash Valentine’s Day: Ladies, this is specifically for you- when the conversation starts-DO NOT BASH VALENTINE’S DAY-you will come off as a bitter girl and no one likes a bitter girl.
4. Facebook and Twitter Updates can wait: Now, we are all guilty of this but no one likes the person playing with their phone. Focus on the game, make conversation but don’t update, unless you are thanking BSB for these great tips. #thankyoubostonsportsblog

Ditch the dinner plans, grab your Bruin’s jersey and head to the Garden to watch at least one Boston team beat New York…too soon?

Bruins vs. Sabres Tonight @ 7:30

The Bruins look to keep the momentum going tonight vs the lowly 22-24-6 Sabres in Buffalo tonight. Tuukka Rask is getting the start tonight as Timmy has been in net for the past two games. As we move closer to the postseason I would expect to become a familiar pattern with the hope of keeping Thomas healthy and well-rested.

Weekend Recap

Is there really anything to say about this weekend? Yesterday was turning out to be a great day. Celtics won, Bruins won…only one more win left and the day was complete. Then our hearts and dreams were shattered, again. Toughest Monday in a long time. I think 90% of New England is in depression. The other 10% have already jumped off the Zakim bridge. Not a great way to start the week.

Talkin’ with Marchand

At the end of the Brad Marchand signing I got a chance to kick it with Brad for a little bit and ask him a few questions about last year’s cup run and this year’s B’s squad. Check it out:

AM: Going back to the playoffs last season, what was your favorite part of the Stanley Cup run?

BM: I think my favorite part would be after we scored our fourth goal (in game 7 a 4-0 win), we were all on the bench celeberating watching the clock count down and we knew we had it and we knew we won it. Everyone’s kind of running back and forth on the bench giving each other hugs.

AM: How is this team different from the team that won the cup a year ago?

BM: Well we have three different guys but it’s not a whole lot different. We want to play the same way, we play hard and want to be tough to play against. We have Pouliot who came in and is playing really good hockey and Joe’s (Corvo) has played great too. We still have a great team and hopefully make another good run.

AM: Speaking of Joe, last night after your goal (against the Senators, tied the game 3-3) I saw that you were real pumped with him, what did you say to him?

BM: I said great job getting the puck to the net for me in a position where I could get a rebound, I just had to let him know (wry smile)

AM: Your on pace for a 70+ point season, what has been the key from last year to this year that has caused the increased production?

BM: I think a lot of it is who I am playing with (The Bru-tang Clan). Seguin and Bergy, they are both great players who make a lot of great plays. I’m learning to be a consistent player and learning to play your best every night, that’s what they (Claude and his staff) expect of you.

Just as everyone would probably guess, I can personally tell you Brad is a real laid back guy that everyone one of us would be down to throw some beers back with. 23 and Stanley Cup champion, doesn’t get much better than that. Thanks again to Brad for his time and answering my questions.

Brad Marchand Event Recap

Yesterday, the Boston Sports Blog had the pleasure of joining I Love Boston Sports on the BU campus for an autograph and t-shirt signing with Bruins star Brad Marchand. The event was a complete success from start to finish, with a great turnout of Bruins fans eager to meet their favorite player. Fans had the opportunity to meet Marchand, chat with him, take pictures, and get an autograph. I Love Boston Sports also had their full line of Bruin’s gear on display, with a wide variety of creatively designed shirts and sweatshirts for all die hard Boston sports fans. Not going to lie, the Bru-Tang Clan line of apparel was sick! For most of the event, Marchand actually rocked a sweatshirt with him and the entire team as cartoon drawings, obviously with Brad as the leader of the clan. Anyways, the event was a great success all around. We were all pumped to join in on the event so again, big thanks to the guys at ilovebostonsports.com! Stay tuned for more info in the next week about another Bruins event that the Boston Sports Blog will be a part of!
