B’s Take Down Buffalo

The Bruins started an hour after the Celtics and still almost ended before them, especially the way that game just kept going. The Bruins traveled to Buffalo to take on the Sabres tonight, after having yesterday’s game rescheduled due to some snow flurries.. The B’s started off flat but were able to draw blood first, in the 2nd period, when Marchand notched his team-leading 6th goal of the season. Keep in mind that he was injured last game and didn’t play, and was reportedly going to sit out tonight too. Thankfully, he didn’t.

The Sabres tied it up later in the second period as Ennis slipped a goal b9127148-standardy Anton Khudobin (26 saves) as Tuuka Rask had the night off. This was clearly a Goaltender’s game, with both Goalie’s coming up with huge saves, especially by Ryan Miller (38 saves) of the Sabres.

Patrice Bergeron added one of his own to make the game 2-1 halfway through the 3rd period. That is two on the season now for Bergy. David Krejci had a wide open net after the Sabres pulled Miller in the last minute, but decided to give it up to Milan Lucic, who notched his 3rd goal of the year. Krejci made that assist number 7 on the season and leads the Black and Gold with 9 points on the season. That pretty much sums up this Bruins team. They don’t care about stats, they just want to win. Not many players would make that pass. Amazing game, and the Bruins are now 8-1-1. It was even more satisfying because they are the only team to beat us in regulation this season.

This is a new Bruin’s record for the best start in franchise history. The B’s are now tied for first place in the Eastern Conference with the Devils.

They will take on the Rangers for the third time this season on Tuesday. Each team has won one game a piece. Then, we will travel back to Buffalo again on Friday. Who designed this schedule? Anyways, hopefully both Boston teams can keep playing as hot as they have been!

B’s versus Canes

The Bruins will take on the 2-2 Carolina Hurricanes tonight at 7. The Bruins are looking to improve to 4-0-1 on the season. Both teams have scored 2.75 goals per game, while the Bruins have only allowed 2 per game, compared to the 3.25 that the Hurricanes have allowed.  However, we only average 29 shots per game, where they average 39. This is better for our percentages, but tough when we have Anton Khudobin making his first start of the season. He started one game for us last season and only allowed 1 goal while indexrecording 44 saves. He has only played in 7 career games.

Gregory Cambell, David Krejci, Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, and Rookie Dougie Hamilton are all tied for the team lead with 3 points. Lucic is the leader with 3 goals and penalty minutes with 17. This fits right in with the Bruins model ever since the won the Cup 2 years ago. There is no clear-cut star on this season. It could have been Savard before he got concussed, but now there is no one. Just a team that’s willing to do whatever it takes to get the W. I love that hockey’s back.

Go Bruins!

Look on the Bright Side

Not much good news in the NHL this season, but there is one thing that Bruin’s fans can be happy about. Nathan Horton is now healthy and will play if and when the season starts. He last played on January 22nd after his 2nd concussion in just 7 months. His first concussion came against the Canucks in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals. He scored 17 goals and had 15 assists last season before getting sidelined in January.

This will be big for the Bruins who struggled to score at the end of last season. Horton is a proven scorer with a 30+ goal season and many 20+ goal seasons. Can’t wait for the black and gold to get started again.

Bruins Sign Marty Turco!

This is a smart move by Peter Chiarelli. After losing Tuukka Rask for 4-6 weeks with a lower abdomen/groin strain the Bruins were left with fourth string Providence goaltender Michael Hutchinson to back up Tim Thomas. I like this signing because it gives the Bruins a veteran, with experience, who won’t be rattled in games down the stretch when Timmy needs a break. Turco is 36 years old and has a career 2.35 goals against average .910 save percentage, primarily with the Dallas Stars. He wasn’t great for the Blackhawks in 2010-2011 (Turco has been playing in Austria this year), but he is only going to be needed as a short-term stop-gap as he is not eligible for the Stanley Cup playoffs because he was acquired after the trade deadline. Turco is expected to join the B’s on Wednesday and I would expect Claude to start him within the week to get him into the flow of the team and the NHL game.

Brian Rolston Spotlight

As questionable as Chiarelli’s “depth” (rather than scoring) moves were I was glad to see Brian Rolston come back to Beantown. Back in the late 90s, early 00s Rolston was one of my favorite Bruins players. He was a great two-way forward, a leader, and was able to stay injury-free. However, my favorite part of his game was his short-handed skills. When he saw significant time on the penalty kill he had a knack for coming up with some shorties. From 2000-2004 (with the B’s) he had 16 short-handed goals, a pretty impressive number which included 9 SHG in the 2000-2001 season. (Enjoy the throwback pic: Rolston with former Bruin Eric Weinrich)

Rolston, 39, began his career with the New Jersey Devils during the 94-95 season where he was a member of that Stanley Cup team. He has also been a part of three U.S. Olympic teams which sort of explains why he was the captain of the Minnesota Wild after he left the Bruins. No doubt Rolston brings hardened veteran experience to the team. Hopefully he is a positive influence in the locker room during these inconsistent times for the Bruins. Given that he was just on the Islanders one of the cellar dwellers of the NHL, he can provide some perspective for these guys.

Blame It on the Lockout?

If you had to guess who had the best TV Ratings among NHL teams who would you choose? Flyers? Penguins? Blackhawks? Rangers? Guess again. The Buffalo Sabres statistically have the most people tuning in to watch them lose. Probably because they have nothing else to watch (i.e. Buffalo Bills) and they are basically a part of Canada.  Typically, the Sabres and the cry baby Ryan Miller are usually a good squad. However, they are only 20-24 this season, sitting last place in the Northeast Division.

“The league’s biggest feel-good story locally is in Boston, where the Bruins have carried over the momentum from their 2011 Stanley Cup win to post the biggest local TV ratings increase this season. NESN’s average rating of 5.25 (third-highest in the league) is up a whopping 89.5 percent from last year. The average of 125,000 homes that tune in to Bruins games is the highest in the NHL.”

-Sports Business Journal

Clearly, Boston has found a revived love after seeing the Celtics enter into senior citizen status.  It also probably helps that our hometown Heroes won the Stanley Cup last season (in case you guys missed it).  The lockout in the NBA definitely has helped this as well, because you either watch hockey, or find a reality TV show to watch, which ironically is probably more exciting than watching the Celts this season.  So keep tuning in after this all-star break as the Bruins make their second run towards the cup. Even if you don’t watch it, waste all of your schools power by turning on every TV in your dorm to NESN during game time to get the ratings up so we can get ahead of pointless Buffalo.

Bruins Mean Business

With the NBA starting back up in a few weeks and the huge shadow it’s cast over the NHL, the Bruins are doing everything they can to make sure people do not forget they are the world champions. Last night the Bruins put the Senators away late in the game, coming out on top 5-2 to begin a new 3 game winning streak. Timmy Thomas was spectacular in net, making 47 saves and only allowing 2 behind him. Since November 1, the B’s are 17-3 and sit comfortably atop the Northeast Division. Little bit of a turnaround from the 3-7 campaign throughout October. The Bruins have a two day break until they’re put to the test against a strong Flyers squad in Philly. The season is still young, but we’ve seen the kind of team we have though both ups and down. The Stanley Cup hangover has been well pushed aside and the boys mean nothing but business from now til June, when the bottles start popping again and Lord Stanley gets another joyride down Boylston Street.

Enough Fooling Around

Eleven games in and the Bruins are 4-7. Not exactly expected or ideal, but also not a reason at all to worry. They’re still coming out of the Stanley Cup hangover. Marchand and Seguin have stepped off the bar counters and are ready to roll. Chara is, well, still 12’7” and a complete beast. A victory at home Tuesday and three day rest after may be just what the Bruins have needed. The turnaround continues tomorrow. They’re going to come out firing Saturday night and take this one in Toronto for sure.
